Guns, Grit, and Gold

Shot up, laughing and aware of surround
Holed up in a dirt floor shed downtown
Lefty holsters his gun and lays his friend down
Then shots ring out and they both hit the ground

Ten odd years and thought I turn you high
Sell your horse, take the gold and ride
His voice starts to shake and a tear in his eye
Poncho you know I’d never let you die

We’ve been ridin we’ve been robbin since we we’re twelve years old
We’ve sweated through the deserts, we’ve starved in the cold
We won’t go quiet, no we won’t go old
Whiskey wine and women, guns grit and gold

I remember the first train we ever took
My palms we’re sweaty and my hands both shook
We broke through the door and wired the safe
And blew hundred dollar bills all over the place

They were on the ground and all over the train
Floatin through the air like a greenback rain
And there’s you laughing and grabbin at bills
And me just glad I didn’t get us both killed

We’ve been ridin we’ve been robbin since we we’re twelve years old
We’ve sweated through the deserts, we’ve starved in the cold
We won’t go quiet, no we won’t go old
Whiskey wine and women, guns grit and gold

With Poncho getting worse he turned to his friend
I’m afraid I’ll never ride again
No, just listen, take the money and go
And meet you one way or another back in Ohio

Lefty looked at him straight in the eyes
His heart bursting with love and pride
He pulled him to his feet and put a gun in each hand
And with guns a blazin out the door they both ran

We’ve been ridin we’ve been robbin since we we’re twelve years old
We’ve sweated through the deserts, we’ve starved in the cold
We won’t go quiet, no we won’t go old
Whiskey wine and women, guns grit and gold
