Tide to come in at Pour House

Music history is full of acts that feature identical twins. There were the Everly Brothers, who -- well, OK, so they were born two years apart. There were the Blues Brothers, Jake and Elwood, who ñ oh, yeah, they were an act played by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. OK, so maybe history doesn't abound with musical twins.

Ten Mile Tide would like to change that, though. The San Francisco band features identical twin brothers Jason and Justin Munning, as well as Steve Kessler and Mike Mazzoni. While Ten Mile Tide has an easygoing sound that might remind you of Dave Matthews or Widespread Panic, it would be wrong to classify these guys as a jam band. For one thing, the songs on "Midnight is Early," the band's latest release, are way too short to be considered for jam-band status. That is actually a benefit for the band, because in the end these four- to five-minute songs allow the listener to stay with the album.

Standout tracks include beautiful material such as "All Our Ships," "Carry On" and "Sweet Life." One of the CD's best songs also happens to be its longest, the nearly six-minute "Hurricane," which finds the singing band members harmonizing quite nicely.

Ten Mile Tide advocates music downloading and has even appeared on CNN to promote Kazaa, a popular file-sharing computer program. According to the band, more than 10 million Ten Mile Tide songs have been downloaded from Kazaa since the band first began offering them. Whether you download the band's info from the Internet, or go down to the store to buy the CD, definitely make plans to catch Ten Mile Tide when they perform live at the Pour House in West Ashley on Wednesday night.

A-ha! I have it! Nelson, now there's a band with a set of identical twins. Too bad that Nelson stunk. Ten Mile Tide, on the other hand, doesn't stink.
