The last time that I saw Nate was when Josh and I went skiing with him up at Kimberly. The eternal chance taker went off a large jump and crashed. I was looking at an old picture today. Hell, I think my Mom even blew up one in the series into a poster size pic at one point for me as a birthday present. All of us are standing together at Couer d' Alene Lake near our recreation of the pyramids of Egypt. We are all there. Justin, Jason, Nathan, Shane, and Ryan. Smiling. Ripped . Magnificent in our youth.
I miss you Nate. I think about the old days often. Truth be told I think about them every single day. Sounds like a song a wrote once.
I still remember.
The past lives strong with me. Even though I may no longer be living a young life.
I remember the good times so well that they beat out the tears. I am feeling time more now. An hour goes by quickly, like our parents said they would. It used to be that everything was "yesterday" with me. It's still that way. But yesterday is starting to be a bigger chunk of time.
I have pictures Nate. But sometimes in my dreams I am 15 and skiing down a black diamond run on 49 degrees north and you and your brothers are at my sides. Riding a torrent of uncontrolled snow and enthusiasm down a slope that is beyond our skill, but not beyond our crazed confidence.

Funny little boys who spent so very long cutting up paper into bits so that they could shower me with it for confetti.
Great big signs run on computer paper that wrapped around my car telling me I was a great mom.
Streamers that went everywhere.
Birthday dinners that included the red hots that you bought, the lemon pie that you made, and the love that you gave.
And when you were in Kindergarten, you asked me to take you to Jones Pharmacy so you could buy something. Once we were there you asked me for the money and I was not to watch you. When ou found your 'secret' we went home. You were going to wrap it and wait for your brothers to get home but the excitement was too much for you. So you wrapped it.....
And handed it to me. You gave me a key chain with a toy wrench. What a gift since really you wanted it. And years later, when you went to New York, I gave it back to you and told you to bring it back safely, which you eventually did.
So I am now saving it for you, and a mother's love. Shall I wrap the wrench? How do I wrap my endless love?

One time, Nate and I went camping on the AT. I wanted to show him a campsite we called Euphoria in high school. It was a two mile hike in; but we first caught the sunset on top of Pole Steeple (a different trail) with a flask. It was dark by the time we got to looking for Euphoria's trail head and I hadn't visited that spot in a year or two. Nate and I spent an hour hiking in circles before he stopped, dropped his pack, and quite frankly suggested we pay the seven dollars for a registered camp site.
That night, we slept underneath the stars. I woke up a few times through out the night to find Nathan sitting in front of me when the fires smoke was blowing towards us acting as a shield, then he would move behind me when the smoke cleared so I could feel the fires warmth.

I didn't know Nathan, or much about the band. But I remember him at your concert in Vail last summer. He seemed to be everywhere and I'm sure he was a main reason that the show went so well. We just happened to be in CO for a vacation from Indiana and were told about the free concert.
We loved the band and my kids (11 and 13) were the ones that pointed out the "man in the suit". Having done what you do many years ago, I know what a loss his presence will be. It is hard to find guys with the spirit and love of life that he obviously had.

Last night I found a box of bolts and screws and wiring equipment and I remebered how you said "the only way to be able to finish a project without going to the store is to just have EVERY kind of hardware there possibly is." Out of the blue I decided to "google" you to see if there might be a slight chance of finding you. I never expected to find you like this.....it saddens me to no end.
You were by far my best friend throughout high school and beyond. We shared so many things.....from blasting caps, beers n' bowls to girlfriends.....so many memories of our Mom's calling eachocher trying to figure out where the hell we were and what the hell we were doing. And usually we were just in the park across from our houses hiding in the trees, hehe.

I had a dream last night and Nate stopped by and let me know that everything was all right. Guess I felt bad that I couldn't find the words to say, "I'm sorry for the your loss and that my family truly will miss him." He touched our lives in such a special way and he was a true friend that we will remember for the rest of our lives. His Spirit was a gift to us all and I believe he will always be with us.

I miss you a lot right now. The other day I was playing mandolin in Golden Gate Park and an old man came walking slowly across the park toward me with a beat up guitar case. His name was Shadow, he loved some of the same things you loved, he was nearly blind, a 71 yr old hippie, and he was a Scorpio--which meant a lot to him. We played a couple tunes together and then I told him about you--told him you would have really liked him. Heck, maybe you did even talk to him that time you didn't know my address and so kept yourself warm on the corner of Haight and Ashbury all night with a bottle of Jameson.
He told me Scorpios are like Kawasakis--a huge engine inside a fragile frame and sometimes they are too powerful to stick around long in this world. His son died when he was 9 yrs old and he says he's been dealing with it all his life. We discussed the meaning of life and one thing we agreed on is that it has nothing to do with making money. Kindness and compassion are the only things that ring true for me as meaningful--and you helped teach me those. Thank you.

For the past six years I have been in love with Nathan; he was literally the best boyfriend any woman could ever dream of. Charming, cute, thoughtful patient, wise, generous, considerate, funny, easy-going, handy, advenurous, creative....I could go on and on forever. I remember how much Nathan cared for and loved his family, as well as his many friend he met throughout his path of life. If there is such thing as a selfless being Nate would certainly qualify.
When I lost Nathan I lost my best-friend and my soul-mate. Not a day goes by where I don't think about him or about how different my life will be as I live it with out him. Somedays I forget he's gone and wait for him to get back fom being on tour. Missing him makes me home-sick.
I recently turned 23 and remembered how Nathan once showered me with an array of presents when I turned 18, he called it my birthday week. There is no way I'll meet another man who will be anything like Nathan and that though very often makes me cry.
I would like to thank Nate's family and all of his friends for welcoming me into thier lives with such warmth and generosity. I hope all you guys are doing well and following each owns path in life.

I have a confession...
The band just came to town for the first time. I was in Alyse's room checking my email and she had Neil Young's Harvest resting on her computer. I put it in. Nathan later told me he had met Justin in the hall and they raised a browl because of my music choice. I led him to believe that it was my own doing and went that day of his words and bought my own copy to study. This past Saturday I sat around a fire with Alyse at Lexi's and thanked her.
I listen to Harvest now.
Yesterday the rains poured. I tip-toed about and Sakeeb kept me close. Come evening, I was sitting at my desk writing and the sun broke through. there's a selfish way in which i feel this loss as particularly poignant because i didn't yet get to know nathan nearly as well as i would have liked.
i remember nathan during that wild and free and colorful summer of 1999, when the younger siblings were at the burgoyne compound. he was, to me, the epitome of what was good about the 60's era. it almost seemed that that was the time to which he was supposed to belong. he was sharp, witty, genuine and deeply caring about everyone and everything.
when i saw him, and all of you at your show and then in the woods, this summer, i remembered how very beautiful your brother is. i assumed that i had a lifetime ahead to know him.
to end with another selfish comment, i remember talking to nathan during that show at moe's and he told me, in essence, that he was doing exactly what he wanted to be doing with his life, that he was very happy and content with his path. i like to believe that that somehow makes his too-short life at least closer to fully-lived.
he was a gift. we are all blessed. i thank whatever god there may be for my decision to stay and talk with you all that july night.

So who hasn't heard the Winter Park story?
Friday night TMT played Denver, CO and Manhattan, Kansas showed up. Stevie had been good thus far and helped himself to the brown bottle at the roof top after party.
Saturday the band had a morning appointment a few hours down the road in Winter Park. It was family day on the mountain but the band was more interested in the World Cup game, a crowd didn't exist, and Stevie was in top form.
Over lunch it was decided Steve would sing "Rainbow Connection" as an acapella solo act. Which he did fantastically. Half way through the song, Nathan emerges from the van in a wrestling "unitart" he had purchased at a thrift store in Podunk, USA a day or two earlier. Nathan proceeded to do jumping jacks and cartwheels in accompnyment to Stevies already ackward humanitarian effort.
It was perfect. Nathan had a den full of spice. Miss him dearly.

For some reason, Linda Thill came to mind as I was kicking back in Sun Valley, Idaho today. While I had heard so much about him from TMT, I only had the pleasure of actually meeting Nathan a couple of times. The first time we met, I had a similar experience to many folks -- he greeted me with open arms, a huge smile, and a big hug, as if we had known each other for years. The Tide was supposed to have gotten to my house around 10PM, but surprise surprise, they were late again! They rolled in around 2AM, and although I had to work at 6, I stayed up for a few hours to catch up with them. I'm so glad I did! Nathan was full of stories and laughter, and we immediately bonded over common interests. His love for his family was evident even in those few hours of conversation, and his bright spirit was so infectious that I perked right up despite the hour. He was an amazingly beautiful soul.

I want to thank, Steve Kessler for all of the loving work he put into this website and the wonderful slide show of Nathan's life at Nathan's Memorial Service, and of course all those who helped prepare for the memorial. There must have been 50 people all doing a specific job to make this come off so beautifully. Thank you to all who came such long distances to be there for Nathan and our family. It was such a wonderful gathering of many of his friends, relatives, and those who knew him briefly. We are thankful to all of you who contributed to the website and unable to be there. We felt your presence in your spirit. And of course, my thank you to Linda, Nathan's mother, who was so garcious to all of her guests, and presented Nathan so well in the viewing.
Most of all, I am thankful to Nathan for being such a loving, caring, and enthusiastic person with strong character and a gentle and kind disposition. Nathan was humble - a strong indication of inner strength, and yet he stood up for himself when it was necessary to do so.
I am passionately proud of my son, Nathan, who from early childhood displayed the virtues that all the contributors to the website have at sometime experienced in their relationship or contact with him. As he grew, so did his strengths.

I first heard about Nate from Jason nad Justin when I joined the band three years ago. They told me that I reminded them of their little brother. Later, when I met him, I realized what a compliment that was. I instantly liked Nate - I thought he was so cool. Everytime we met up and had a chance to hang out we did so night and day until one of us had to leave and the next time we met up it was the same. I only met Nathan once at a show. He was walking around with a clipboard asking for new additions to the Free Range Robots email list. I remember him saying they were from Spokane and of course I had to say 99% of my mom's family's from there, and listened to me natter on for a minute or so about my weird family. I only knew him for a few minutes so I only got a glimpse of him. I took a walk through the park Nathan showed me 2 weeks ago... we were going to sit under a willow tree together but never got around to it.

i have so many memories of nate and i don't think there is one that didn't involve us having a great time. nate lived life to the fullest. he was always willing to meet new people wherever he went, he always made sure everybody was having a good time and he was an all around good friend. i remember when the robots played in cheney for the first time. after the show everybody in the band went back to spokane except nate and i. nate and i were invited to some people's apartment in which we met at the show. we arrived at about 2am with the people we had met. i was talking to one girl and nate went into the kitchen with a differnt girl. seconds later, the girl that nate went with came out and asked to leave. when i asked nate what happened he just said " i think i accidentally made a fat joke" and then he laughed about it. then we both managed to fall down the stairs in the apartment complex and run back to knock on her door just to run off several times. i will never forgot nasty nate munning and i'm so glad i was able to see the states with him before he passed. lots of love to the munnings and ten mile tide and anybody who him. the road, pbr, and the robots will never be the same without him.

I had the priviledge of meeting Nate while traveling with the Tide in August. I have many vivid memories from just the short amount of time I knew him. Nate is not the kind of person anyone could forget. He will be alive in our memories for a very long time.
The thing that sticks out the most in my mind was the loving, gentle way he treated his mother. He was by her side the entire time she was with us. It was so adorable to see this family's closeness and respect for one another. In meeting Linda it is easy to see where her boys get their good natured ways. She is amazing through and through.
I could tell Nate cared so much about his family. I helped him carefully pick out a present for his sister, and he'd do absolutely anything for the Tide. One story he told in the van - in great, animated detail was about a time Ten Mile Tide asked him to find this DVD they absolutely HAD to have for the Jammies Awards in NY. The DVD was in the archives - a room full of disorganized boxes - and he was told that it may or may not be in a case - among several boxes of stacked CDs. For days in a row he drove an hour to Linda's after a long day of working construction, searched countless hours knowing the Tide was counting on him. He was so proud that he found it and sent it to them. Expecting to hear praise for this great job he'd done, Steve had to be the one to break the news that meanwhile, upon thinking there was no way Nathan would find it in that mess, the boys contacted the company that made the DVD and had a copy rushed to them for 20 bucks. You can imagine Nate's reaction. =)

I did not know Nathan very well and it has been a number of years since I last saw him... However, I know his dad well - as an old Army buddy from back in Germany and how highly Nick thought of his children, and he had the undeniable love and compasion for his kids, that only a parent could have. The young calf was running down a game trail that led him straight into a logging road. We rounded the corner just in time to find the moose’s head planted squarely in the passenger side window. Luckily, for the moose, and us he was able to turn in enough time to make the impact fairly minimal. We just found ourselves side by side, speeding down the old logging road together. Eventually I was able to pull the vehicle to a stop. The young Moose stopped about fifty yards ahead and looked back at this weird phenomenon he had just encountered.
It was Nate who noted that where there is a calf, there is a mother. We spent the next half hour stalking a very disgruntled momma moose. She was about 20 yards up the game trail probably wondering where her child was, while contemplating if she should charge. Eventually she decided we we’re a nuisance not worthy of her time and wondered off into the woods. We had left our sugar cubes and spears at home. We headed further down the road.
Riding in my parent’s small excuse for an SUV, I turned to Nate and ask him which road to take. “Well, we could go back to the main road” he said “but this road up here is a short cut and we’ll see some really cool stuff.” I looked ahead at the road he spoke of. One whole side of it resembled a sunken creek bed. The other side sat a couple feet higher. The road quickly rose and then fell from sight heading down the hillside. Nathan noticed this too. “I’m sure it gets better after this first bend.” Nathan always had a convincing air of confidence.
As we battled the mining road Nathan entertained us with old mining stories of greed, murder and betrayal; and the occasional moose harassment/near death experience. Nate, like his brothers and grandfather, had an extraordinary talent for story telling. He was so good at it that it almost distracted me from the punishment I was putting my Parent’s car through. “Oooh, you’ll want to get one of your tires on that boulder.” Nate would say periodically. The car creaked and groaned, unaccustomed to such careless treatment.
I was fortunate enough to make a couple mine trips with Nathan. His last experience at the mines was just as legendary as any, filled with rats, moose, whiskey and guns. Nate even found gold on this trip, panning with his Grandfather. He loved the mines. It was a part of his life he held very sacred. I think the only reason he wasn’t up there more this summer was because he was on the road almost non-stop.
For the last four months Nate’s home was the vast expanses of the American Highway. He spent most of the time with his Brother’s and the rest of Ten Mile Tide, but for about four weeks Nate was a Robot. It was our bands first time on the road and Nate’s expertise was priceless. Rolling down a highway with Nate is a lot like rolling down an old mining road. He was always there to let us know if there was an animal looming in the shadows. He was ready to stay up all night just to keep the driver alert. And he was there to make sure we looked around and appreciated this experience that so many people never get to know. For the last four months of his life Nate was truly and undeniably happy. I feel extremely grateful for the time that I spent with him and he taught me that you have to make your experiences happen. I loved him and will never forget him.

For many of us, Nathan Munning was the LIGHT-- his warm presence, his intoxicating smile, his laugh, his unconditional love, his heart-felt embrace.... Nate could light up any night/or day with his energy and passion. In moments spent with Nathan, the world was perfect just the way it was....being there....IN THE MOMENT.
Now we must realize that the tears we shed for Nathan are perfect too.... The light which Nathan created has not faded, but only become stronger as he joined himself with the Divine Light of the Universe--the supreme, unconditional love which Nate was already so familiar with.
Please, Please take the time to carry on Nate's work--in every relationship, in every hug, in every laugh, in every smile...BE HERE NOW....Be in the Moment...Love the one your with! It's in the unconditional love that we show others each day that truly gives us a glimpse of what eternity is like while we are still here on this Earth...

I remember the first time that I met Nathan; it is a day I will never forget. I don’t think that I had ever before been so nervous. It was my wedding day. Against the wishes of my soon to be in-laws, my wife and I booked a hippie jam band to provide the entertainment during our reception. I hoped that everything would work out. I remember standing in front of our 200 guests going through our vows when something strange caught my eye. There was a dreadlocked gentleman in a pimp suit with a top hat sitting near the back. I thought “who in the heck is that guy?” We exchanged a look and he smiled. I thought that he must be one of Tamara’s crazy cousins from out of town. He was, after all, sitting on her family’s side of the isle. Steve and Marc launched into our wedding recessional and Tamara and I walked down the isle newly married. We had been married for less than five minutes and were chatting with family and friends when the dreaded guy in the pimp suit came up to me and introduced himself. Rather than shake my hand the first thing Nathan did was give me a huge hug and introduced himself as Nathan, Justin and Jason’s little brother. That was the kind of guy Nathan was. He could semi crash a wedding and introduce himself to the bride and groom before they even had a chance to talk to their grandparents. He was a special spirit. I have had the opportunity to spend time with Nathan several times in the two and a half years since I first met him at my wedding. Every time he has greeted me with a smile and a hug just like the first time we met. We will all miss Nathan, but more importantly, we will remember Nathan and the good times we shared. I still can’t believe the guy crashed my wedding in a pimp suit and a top hat. I love it.

Nathan was one of the kindest, most generous souls I’ve known. The kind of guy who would open his door to anyone and give you the shirt right off his back. I can remember sitting in his living room many times thinking, “Man, I should really live my life more like that guy…” He just had this passion for everything and everyone that was infectious…so laid back, so smart, so understanding, so funny, so supportive, so genuinely, undeniably good. All of this, coupled with Nathan’s fierce love for his family and friends, truly made him an inspiration. He is one of those people who leaves the world a much better place than when he entered it. Thank you, Nate…you will be missed and remembered.

Nathan is my first Traveling Partner!
Although I only knew him for his last month of life, I will never forget the place or the people he introduced me too. We had an amazing time traveling the country together. He took me through 21 states... and treated like a queen and they named me Smiles! because I work for smiles & My limits are from here to there and if I don't reach them I don't stick around for long!
He has the most amazing Friends and Family!
I've never been so welcome into someone home like the way his mother welcomed us home! Linda is the coolest mom I've ever met and see has raised 3 amazing sons! It is so hard to realized how short life really is...
For the past month I knew Nathan... I know he lived life to the fullest and enjoyed traveling the world with a smile on his face!
So when you think of Nathan I hope you all will remember his smiles and never forget to enjoy life because life is too short to waste it! So never forget to Smile!
