Our brother, best friend, tour manager, and all around favorite person, Nathan Munning, passed away early Monday morning. He was 26. Many of you may remember him from the road as the fine dressed gentleman with the cane and top hat, or maybe you know him better as the friend who was always ready with a smile or a helping hand. When not on tour with Ten Mile Tide, he served double-duty as tour manager and best friend to our good buddies the Free Range Robots. He was also a fixture at festivals across the country, and his infectious energy and love of music affected all those around him. Memorial services will be held in his native Spokane this Saturday, October 21, 2006. Arrangements are currently being made. And years later, when you went to New York, I gave it back to you and told you to bring it back safely, which you eventually did. So I am now saving it for you, and a mother's love. I wanted to show him a campsite we called Euphoria in high school. It was a two mile hike in; but we first caught the sunset on top of Pole Steeple (a different trail) with a flask. It was dark by the time we got to looking for Euphoria's trail head and I hadn't visited that spot in a year or two. Nate and I spent an hour hiking in circles before he stopped, dropped his pack, and quite frankly suggested we pay the seven dollars for a registered camp site. That night, we slept underneath the stars. I woke up a few times through out the night to find Nathan sitting in front of me when the fires smoke was blowing towards us acting as a shield, then he would move behind me when the smoke cleared so I could feel the fires warmth. We played a couple tunes together and then I told him about you--told him you would have really liked him. He told me Scorpios are like Kawasakis--a huge engine inside a fragile frame and sometimes they are too powerful to stick around long in this world. His son died when he was 9 yrs old and he says he's been dealing with it all his life. We discussed the meaning of life and one thing we agreed on is that it has nothing to do with making money. Kindness and compassion are the only things that ring true for me as meaningful--and you helped teach me those. Half way through the song, Nathan emerges from the van in a wrestling "unitart" he had purchased at a thrift store in Podunk, USA a day or two earlier. I have many vivid memories from just the short amount of time I knew him. Nate is not the kind of person anyone could forget. He will be alive in our memories for a very long time. The thing that sticks out the most in my mind was the loving, gentle way he treated his mother. He was by her side the entire time she was with us. It was so adorable to see this family's closeness and respect for one another. In meeting Linda it is easy to see where her boys get their good natured ways. She is amazing through and through. I could tell Nate cared so much about his family. I helped him carefully pick out a present for his sister, and he'd do absolutely anything for the Tide. One story he told in the van - in great, animated detail was about a time Ten Mile Tide asked him to find this DVD they absolutely HAD to have for the Jammies Awards in NY. The DVD was in the archives - a room full of disorganized boxes - and he was told that it may or may not be in a case - among several boxes of stacked CDs. For days in a row he drove an hour to Linda's after a long day of working construction, searched countless hours knowing the Tide was counting on him. He was so proud that he found it and sent it to them. Expecting to hear praise for this great job he'd done, Steve had to be the one to break the news that meanwhile, upon thinking there was no way Nathan would find it in that mess, the boys contacted the company that made the DVD and had a copy rushed to them for 20 bucks. You can imagine Nate's reaction. =) Linda, Justin, Jason, Nicole, and Nick, I've been thinking about you all week. You are in the thoughts and hearts of so many people. Luckily, for the moose, and us he was able to turn in enough time to make the impact fairly minimal. We just found ourselves side by side, speeding down the old logging road together. Eventually I was able to pull the vehicle to a stop. The young Moose stopped about fifty yards ahead and looked back at this weird phenomenon he had just encountered. It was Nate who noted that where there is a calf, there is a mother. We spent the next half hour stalking a very disgruntled momma moose. She was about 20 yards up the game trail probably wondering where her child was, while contemplating if she should charge. Eventually she decided we we’re a nuisance not worthy of her time and wondered off into the woods. We had left our sugar cubes and spears at home. We headed further down the road. Riding in my parent’s small excuse for an SUV, I turned to Nate and ask him which road to take. “Well, we could go back to the main road” he said “but this road up here is a short cut and we’ll see some really cool stuff.” I looked ahead at the road he spoke of. One whole side of it resembled a sunken creek bed. The other side sat a couple feet higher. The road quickly rose and then fell from sight heading down the hillside. Nathan noticed this too. “I’m sure it gets better after this first bend.” Nathan always had a convincing air of confidence. As we battled the mining road Nathan entertained us with old mining stories of greed, murder and betrayal; and the occasional moose harassment/near death experience. Nate, like his brothers and grandfather, had an extraordinary talent for story telling. He was so good at it that it almost distracted me from the punishment I was putting my Parent’s car through. “Oooh, you’ll want to get one of your tires on that boulder.” Nate would say periodically. The car creaked and groaned, unaccustomed to such careless treatment. I was fortunate enough to make a couple mine trips with Nathan. His last experience at the mines was just as legendary as any, filled with rats, moose, whiskey and guns. Nate even found gold on this trip, panning with his Grandfather. He loved the mines. It was a part of his life he held very sacred. I think the only reason he wasn’t up there more this summer was because he was on the road almost non-stop. For the last four months Nate’s home was the vast expanses of the American Highway. He spent most of the time with his Brother’s and the rest of Ten Mile Tide, but for about four weeks Nate was a Robot. It was our bands first time on the road and Nate’s expertise was priceless. Rolling down a highway with Nate is a lot like rolling down an old mining road. He was always there to let us know if there was an animal looming in the shadows. He was ready to stay up all night just to keep the driver alert. And he was there to make sure we looked around and appreciated this experience that so many people never get to know. For the last four months of his life Nate was truly and undeniably happy. I feel extremely grateful for the time that I spent with him and he taught me that you have to make your experiences happen. I don’t think that I had ever before been so nervous. It was my wedding day. Against the wishes of my soon to be in-laws, my wife and I booked a hippie jam band to provide the entertainment during our reception. I hoped that everything would work out. I remember standing in front of our 200 guests going through our vows when something strange caught my eye. There was a dreadlocked gentleman in a pimp suit with a top hat sitting near the back. I thought “who in the heck is that guy?” We exchanged a look and he smiled. I thought that he must be one of Tamara’s crazy cousins from out of town. He was, after all, sitting on her family’s side of the isle. Steve and Marc launched into our wedding recessional and Tamara and I walked down the isle newly married. We had been married for less than five minutes and were chatting with family and friends when the dreaded guy in the pimp suit came up to me and introduced himself. Rather than shake my hand the first thing Nathan did was give me a huge hug and introduced himself as Nathan, Justin and Jason’s little brother. That was the kind of guy Nathan was. He could semi crash a wedding and introduce himself to the bride and groom before they even had a chance to talk to their grandparents. He was a special spirit. I have had the opportunity to spend time with Nathan several times in the two and a half years since I first met him at my wedding. Every time he has greeted me with a smile and a hug just like the first time we met. We will all miss Nathan, but more importantly, we will remember Nathan and the good times we shared. I still can’t believe the guy crashed my wedding in a pimp suit and a top hat.
